Businesswoman Sheryl Adams is announcing her bid for the Republican nomination in California's 49th Congressional District on Tuesday, seeking to challenge Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA).

Adams, who hails from Del Mar, California, spent her career working for several Fortune 500 companies, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Hyundai, and is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Levin in the swing district.

“I am excited to announce my campaign for California’s 49th Congressional District because it’s California who needs a proven businesswoman to offer real solutions to get our country back on track,” Adams said in a statement. “As I look at Washington, the same career politicians from both parties have enacted policies that have resulted in record inflation, higher energy costs, and healthcare costs that continue to soar.”

California’s 49th District is a D+3, according to the Cook Political Report, and in 2022, Levin won by just over 15,000 votes.

Adams is also endorsed by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who represented the 49th District from 2003-2019 and now represents the state’s 48th District.

“Washington needs more leaders who embody business acumen and entrepreneurialism, those who have experienced the real challenges and triumphs of the private sector, and that is why I am proud to endorse California businesswoman Sheryl Adams for our 49th Congressional District,” Issa said in a statement. “As the former representative for CA-49, I understand the importance of having a strong leader who is dedicated to serving the people. Sheryl Adams possesses these qualities: integrity, passion, and commitment to put the peoples’ voice first.”

Over the next couple of weeks, Adams plans on traveling across the district to meet and listen to voters, her campaign said.

One other Republican candidate has filed with the Federal Election Commission for the seat: Matt Gunderson, another California businessman.

As of April 1, Levin has $511,928 on hand, according to FEC records.
